Application of BHFUSE PPTC in Security Products

Application of BHFUSE PPTC in Security Products

Security products (such as cameras, alarms, access control controllers, smart locks, etc.) typically possess the following characteristics, making PPTC an ideal protective component:

24/7 Continuous Operation: Security systems require constant power, leading to a high cumulative risk of failure. PPTC prevent system downtime and service interruptions caused by the blowing of fuses, significantly reducing maintenance costs.

Complex Outdoor Environments: Many security devices are installed outdoors and are prone to lightning strikes, power fluctuations, and extreme temperature changes, which can cause transient overcurrents or voltage surges. PPTC effectively handle these transient faults.

Multiple Interfaces, High Failure Probability: Security equipment often has numerous external interfaces (e.g., power, network, audio, video, alarm input/output). These interfaces are susceptible to damage during installation or use due to miswiring, short circuits, or ESD.

Cost Sensitivity: In the highly competitive security market, the long-term maintenance-free characteristic of PPTC helps reduce the total lifecycle cost of products.

Compact Size: Modern security devices are trending towards miniaturization. PPTC have a small footprint and are easy to layout on PCBs.

Typical Applications:

1、Main Power Input ProtectionScenario

Whether it's DC 12V/24V or PoE power supply, the power input terminal is the point with the highest risk of overcurrent and short circuits.

Function: In case of power adapter failure, line short circuit, or issues with the device's internal power circuit, the PPTC acts quickly to cut off high current, preventing fault escalation and protecting the core circuitry of the entire device. After the fault is eliminated (e.g., the shorted line is disconnected), the device can recover automatically.

2、PoE Interface ProtectionScenario

Network cameras, wireless APs, etc., powered via Ethernet cables using PoE.

Function: At the interface of both PoE power sourcing equipment (PSE) and powered devices (PD), PPTC are used for inrush current protection compliant with IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards. When devices connect, a significant inrush current can occur; the PPTC effectively limits this current and maintains low resistance after stabilization, not affecting normal power supply. Simultaneously, it also protects against overcurrent caused by Ethernet cable miswiring, etc.

3、External Interface Protection (I/O Lines)Scenario

Zone input terminals of alarm control panels (connected to door contacts, PIR detectors, etc.), alarm output terminals (connected to sirens, lights, etc.).

Function - Zone Input: Prevents users from accidentally shorting the signal lines of low-voltage detectors to AC power lines during arming/disarming, which could introduce high voltage into the mainboard and burn the MCU. A series PPTC effectively limits the current.

Function - Alarm Output: When driving inductive loads like sirens or relays, back EMF surges are easily generated, or short circuits can occur during wiring. The PPTC protects the drive circuit.

4、Motor Drive Circuit ProtectionScenario:

Motors in PTZ cameras, smart locks.

Function: Motors can generate overcurrent several times their rated current during startup or stall, easily burning out the drive chip or the motor itself. Placing a PPTC in series with the motor power supply circuit causes it to trip and cut off current when the motor stalls or behaves abnormally. Once the stall cause is removed (e.g., obstruction cleared from a lock) and the motor cools, the circuit resets, and the lock can be used again. This offers a much better user experience compared to fuses.

5、Battery-Powered Device ProtectionScenario

Backup batteries for wireless sensors, emergency buttons, smart locks.

Function: Prevents hazards like overheating, leakage, or even fire and explosion caused by high-current discharge due to external short circuits or internal battery faults. The PPTC is an indispensable protective component for lithium battery packs.

Summary:

Thanks to their self-recovering, highly reliable, long-life, and maintenance-free characteristics, PPTC have become an indispensable part of modern security product circuit protection design. They effectively balance protection performance and operational maintenance costs, providing a solid foundation for the stable and long-term operation of security systems. During design and component selection, using them in conjunction with overvoltage protection devices like TVS diodes can create a more comprehensive port protection solution.
